I use FX5 filters for all my tanks. I have 6 tanks on 2 separate drip systems. 2-400, 1-300, 1-240, 1-180 and 1-90. I have 14 - FX5 filters spread out over all the tanks. current stock is 12 rays. Maintenance is fairly simple. Filter media is sponges around the baskets and baskets filled with ceramic rings. I like the FX's for a number of reasons:
1. They are enclosed so no humidity issues.
2. Because I have them set up on all tanks, I can easily remove a tank from the system by turning off the supply water valve. Biological Filtration is in place.
3. No extensive plumbing needs to be done.
4. If for some reason I have a tank filtration go down or I forget to plug the filters back in after cleaning (which I've done a time or two), I can simply move filters over from other tanks( one from each tank), clean the bad filters and hook them up to the tanks I took filters from without impacting overall filtration.
5. Low electrical use - each filter only takes 48 watts.
6. Great flow / turnover rates - especially when you put 2-3 together per tank with the intakes grouped together at one end and outflow grouped together at the other end.
7. Easy to set up a pup tank, just move a filter over from one of the bigger tanks to the pup tank and instant biological filtration is in place. If the pups outgrow the tank or get sold off, I move the filter back to another tank to keep the filter bacteria alive.
FX filters are very versatile. I just leave the hoses hanging on the back and move the canisters.
