canister filter or wet/dry

that is awesome. i thats a great idea. i now know what im gonna do for my sump... thanks

Definatley go with both a sump and a canister. As mentioned you can go in-line with your sump or seperate. I have a sump rated for a 400g tank and an XP5 on my 220g and it stays crystal clean with a weekly 25% water change.

Both...

The in-line method sound great.

Yes, I replaced the big power hog pump the setup came with. In it's place is the XP3.

I don't have any good pics but it's setup with the pickup for the XP3 at the bottom of the sump and the return just like it normally would be in the tank. It just sits next to the sump. The tank has two overflows which flow over 12 media trays in the sump before hitting the actual water then it gets recycled back up via the XP3.

does the canister have enough strength to pump enough GPH back up to the tank to get a good turnover rate?

I have no way to measure but it pushes a good amount out the return. Likely does affect the maximum GPH some, meaning I doubt it pushes as hard as it could but it works. The turnover rate in my tank isn't high but it goes through so much media I think it works out ok. I also have 2 internal filters on the tank as backups. Plus a small pump inside the sump which simply pumps sump water back over one of the media trays constantly as well. Along with 2 airstones and a large sponge bio filter in tank.
