I understand what you are trying to accomplish by splitting the outlet from the 2260. It will probably work just fine since you will be adding a valve to limit the flow to the lower diffuser. What will be time consuming is determining what level to place the diffuser above your sand substrate.
Also, if you will have any rocks or plants (plastic or live), they may interfere with the flow pattern you are trying to achieve.
I made a DIY spraybar for my 2260 that runs along the entire front top of the aquarium. This allowed me to direct the flow down the front of the tank, pushing the debris toward the rear where the intake is located. It works fairly well considering I have a lot of rock piles for my fish to hide in. Here is a pic
Of course my tank is larger than yours. You will have to drill holes in your spraybar to accomplish the velocity of the water to push the debris around without moving too much sand.
