Canister Filter Question | 1 larger vs 2 smaller

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would suggest 2 smaller filters just because from my experience it is so much easier to maintain a clean and clear tank. I was able to find 2 Cascade 1000 canister filters at my local petsmart and paid about 100$ each and they work great on my 180 gal that has; 2 silver arrows, 2 jd, 3 tiger oscars, 3 frontosa, 1 lima shovelnose, 1 rtc , 1 peacock eel, 1 ornate birchir, 2 red belly pacu :grinno: ( I know overstocked )

With your stock list I would go with a $200 canister-XP4 if you like, or the new Marineland C530. Then get an AC110, you can get those for around 60$
Kensfish.com has both canisters I mentioned on sale now for $200

Put me in the, get 2 camp.
I like the secure feeling of having a back up should something go wrong with one. Both filters the same brand and size so media, parts are not an issue.
If you should go with just 1, like an fx5..keep an eye out for a cheap, large volume hob that you could throw on the tank in an emergency.

I have 2 HOB Filters on my 55 Gallon that are rated for 90 Gallon tanks a piece, figure one of those and tossing in a few seeded sponge filters for an emergency might be ok?

I would go 2 small.

Gives you more options far as filtration.

For example let's say you want to run some chemical to get some meds out. You can leave 1 canister running with your bio while you swap the other out with chemical. That way your tank stays cycled during the entire process.

Don`t see any problem there. You could bag your bio media from the canister and hang it in the tank should your main filter quit on you.
