i have a 180G tank that i want to change the filtration to a canister filter, problem is it has no stand and is only placed on a wood platform about 4" from the floor, my question is will a canister filter work on this if tank and canister are only leveled? as my tank is not elevated.

Yes. The canister has an impeller so regardless of where it is it will suck the water. Ive had several tanks on the floor before and it was never an issue

thanks guys for quick response, coz' I've asked on a different forum before in w/c i'm also a member of, actually it's local here in the philippines some people say that it would create stress on the filter and won't last long? is that true?

No it is not true
With a closed system (canister) the pressure needed
to return water to the tank varies very little with height

In an open system (sump) however
you will drastically reduce pump output
with each centimeter you drop it

I have an FX5 that sits on the floor 4 ft. below my tank. Running for 5 years now with no problems. I think it would work fine for you but, you probably need 2.

I believe he is concerned about the intake portion, since his tank and filter would be practically level, there would not be any gravitational siphoning for the intake.

The basic guidlines of the canister, is it has to be placed two feet below the tank...........But, I have owned a canister for about seven years that was sitting leveled with the tank.....So it still works..........
