canister filter question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It should and I've never even heard of this two foot rule.By the way..which brand of filter are you looking at? I also have a 180 that I am probably going to add an FX-5 to.

The hardest part is the initial start up, as was mentioned, there is little to no gravity to help send water into the intake hose. Once water is in the intake it works just like any canister.

I am running a cascade 1200 on the floor next to my 90 gallon, also directly on the floor, been about 6months now.

yep any "two foot rule" is just because
most are designed to self prime these days
and expect the filter to be underneith
once running you could have it above in theory
I would try to avoid that tho

How high up from the floor is your tank?

Agreed, but you WILL have problems with intake suction if the filter is above-even a little and if preprimed, as it will loose suction. Been there done that, @ about 24" I got alot of bubbles/air in the canister and it was HELL to prime.

youll be fine bro,,i used to do that too back in the days with fluval 404's and no problem...just make sure you take out all the slack from the hose...........

a canister filter is a closed system so once it is sealed off when the impeller pushes water out that will create the suction needed to pull water in u might lose some off the gph but if so i don't think it would be much

an above tank mounted canister filer would be ideal cause if there was some catastrophic failure or crazy accident and the canisters top popped or a hose came lose the filter just became a siphon don't let this stop u i use a canister filter that i made and its been running for 3 months now with no problems

Thanks guys for all the comments, I'm leaning towards the Eheim right now. Hope it will work for me.
