Canister Filter

First off....what type of filter is this? How old is it?

I replace the main body O-ring every other year on my Fluvals and use Pam cooking spary on them to keep them in shape in between. The reason you don't want to use vasolive or any other petrolium based products is that the best sealing o-rings are natural rubber and natural rubber and petrolium dosn't mix very well.

It IS possible for a Fluval canister to leak only when tipped and in general it's from a bad O-ring. This is especially true in the older 03 series filters and back. The last 04/05 O-ring set I baught was about 5 or 6 bucks so you should always have a set or two on hand.

The filter may not be leaking WATER when it's sitting flat but it CAN leak air into the canister and given enough time this could damage the filter. Crisco is vegatable based by the way and makes a great temporary sealant and O-ring lube.
