canister filters vs sumps

Sump required plumbing drilling or relying on risky overflows with potential to overflow your tank. Canisters don't! But less capacity for filtering. I'd do two fx5 Mabe an ac110 and sponge filters!

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)

also in reply to this.... theres nothing risky about the overflow or plumbing as long as u have researched it all and plumbed/drilled it correctly

Depends what you want. Canisters will do the job. Sumps will do it better and on a larger scale.

You get more water volume, maintenance is not required as often but when it is required normally it takes longer and you can just have more media!

I prefer sumps over all other methods, my tanks with sumps have cleaner water and no issues with nitrates + I would hate to think of the amount of power it would use to filter larger tanks with canisters. I do also have 4x2 tanks running with just 2000 LPH otto but these tanks are only housing one fish or pairs. Just with one or 2 big fish the otto struggles to keep the water clean. I still have some 6x2s that are running eheims also the one with a small stock is doing fine the one with a larger stock requires 2 or 1 water changes per a week to keep the nitrates down and tank clean. The canister is clogged up every 2-3 weeks also!

I think pond filters are far better then canisters also for a big tank theres no doubt. You can fit a fair bit of media in one but the pumps not built in so you need one in your tank or so.

Anything can be done, put enough Fx5s on a 600G tank it just may be filtered as well as a sump but the power draw and setup cost will be more. vice versa for smaller tanks, theres little point having a sump on a 20-30g tank.

I think theres always a risk but its very minimal if you have no clue what your doing as per all things its more risky. Canisters can leak also, I think I have read more posts on canisters stuffing up then sumps or tanks overflowing.

^^^^ agreed

I know I should make my own thread but its only a quick and probably silly question but, if you have a sump that's fed by a weir where the holes/slits go almost to the bottom of the tank, what stops it overflowing the sump and emptying your tank if the return pump fails or there's a power cut?

It should not overflow your sump if there is a solid inner weir with it.

What about a 1kw Pond Heater for the tank with digi thermometer. That would maintain a constant heat I have tank with thesme volume and im deciding wether to go with the koi filter or to go with a above tank trickle system.IMG_3940.JPGIMG_3973.JPGIMG_3974.JPG
