Canister filters with sumps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
extra mechanical filtration? If i end up getting a sump I'll probably use my canister filter. I already have one, might as well use it.

I'd say it's mainly to have a backup. A properly designed sump is light years ahead of any canister filter in terms of mechanical and biological filtration, and flow rates.

Most use them for extra mechanical filteration....i plan on putting one with my sump on my 180. The more filteration the better as the old saying goes.

I've heard the term "water polisher"

I run a sump and a canister together mainly as a safeguard if one fails. My sump pump took a dump (sorry about the rhymes...lol) a couple years ago but it wasn't an emergency cause I had the canister going. It gave me plenty of time to order and have a new pump shipped without my water going south. I also like that the sump draws water from the surface of the tank and the canister draws its water from near the bottom. It seems like ideal circulation...for my tank at least.

Extra mechanical filtration for me, plus one of my canisters has a UV light in it.

More water movement

I get the UV if its part of a the filter. I'm sure you can use a sump as a polisher too. I don't have one laying around so I'm going to run the sump solo!!

As long as you are filtering the appropriate GPH you will be fine with just the sump.
