Canister filters with sumps?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There is nothing wrong with using just a sump as your filter!

I think the sump should save me some money only because I have a tank sitting around not in use that I can transform into a sump. I plan on running 700 gph through it and having 10 to 15+ gallons of media. By my calculation that is about the same or better then the Eheim 2080. Right now my estemated cost it 250 so a huge savings from the Eheim. Eheim do rock though I run a 2080 on a 180 gallon and 2078 on a 120 and love them ; quiet, tons of media space and cheap to operate what more can yoy ask for other then a little more savings at the lfs.

There is nothing wrong with using canistersa with sumps either have done it for 25 yrs on my reef tanks w/o problems.

id like to add that most canisters even the large ones (fx5, dont remember the number on the huge eheim 2080? 2282? idk) but anyway at most they use about 60 watts. So its a neglible amount of extra electricity used if your pump goes out on your sump or you just want extra mech.
If i had an extra can id use one with my sump on the large tank. As it sits now theres just a 50gal sump on it.
