I have a 240 (72x30x25) with a 75g sump and I'm toying withe the idea of a canister for mechanical filtration. My stand has a 15x24x22 space so I'm guessing a fx6 and 2260 are out of the question but I'm not sure since I've read dozens of dimensions and none were the same. Any confirmation that these won't work will be greatly appreciated.
I'm also open to any suggestions concerning smaller alternatives.

I own this model plus 2 smaller models and they work great!

I am not sure why you need a canister for mechanical when your sump system is best for the job. A good mechanical must be easy to clean, and canister is the biggest PIA to clean. If you want greater efficiency in removing fine, you can add a sock to the discharge in the sump.

I have my drain split into 2 6" 50 micron filter socks and they do a good job however the overflow is dependent on particles being in the top 1" of the water column so while the water is very clear there are still some fine particles and I'm thinking a canister with an intake near the substrate may help. I don't really need a canister but this is what is currently annoying me since it's winter and I don't really have anything else to occupy my ocd at the current time. Come spring if I haven't done anything about this I'll probably forget about it until next winter.

my suggestion is put pre-filter sponges on your intakes, they will need to be rinsed out every week but will re leave the mechanical duties of all your filters by a great deal, and easy to pop off and clean.

My overflow is external, coast-to-coast but on the one end. I had extra port foam laying around so I placed some the whole length of the overflow right below the wiers, there is still bypass but it makes the socks go a lot longer between changes.
