I did my first canister maintainance tonight and all was going well until I decided I wanted to move my canister to another compartment in my tank stand. I unlatched the quick release from my XP3 and water start squirting out into my face and shirt. I was like "Oh fawk, this is why I hated canister filters." Then followed by more cursing. I wish somebody would've told me to let the pressure release slowly so no water would squirt out. It's like openning a soda bottle under presure and having the carbonation shoot up out of control. I cleaned up the water mess decided to take a beer break for 15mins.

I went back to work on moving the canister so I decided I need to take off the hose from the quick release to move it to the second compartment in the stand. I yanked the hose off and water everywhere again. Water was siphoning from my tank because my stupid ass forgot to remove the inlet and outlet pipe from the tank. I grabbed a bucket and dump the hose into, hop on a stool, and quickly yanked the inlet and return pipe above the tank water to stop the siphon. Took out the rag and clean up the water mess. More cursing from me and time for a beer break again.

I went back to work and got everything all setup and fire my XP 3 up. I was like why is my spraybar not spraying and it seems like the inlet hose is shooting water out. More cursing and I was just about had it with this XP3 and was about to toss it out the door. Unplug the XP3, lifted the inlet and outlet pipe above tank water. I learned from my first lesson. :D Release the quick latch slowly so water wouldn't squirt everywhere. Yank the hoses off and swap the hoses to make sure I have it right this time around. Got everything hooked up again and fire my XP3 up. Now I could see my spraybar shooting water out. All in all I spend three hours cleaning the filter, moving it around, and cleaning my water mess. Moral of this story is if this is your first time doing canister maintainance plan ahead on spending up to 3 hours on canister filter maintainance. Oh ya, have a six pack ready just in case you're pissed off at making a mess out of your own idiotic mistake.:D

 I've totally started a siphon while doing maintenance. I was so shocked that water was pouring all over me I didn't think to pull the tube out.

Lmfao, I went to clean out my cannister the other day and unplugged a hose that was under pressure. I jammed it back on and left the job for another day

Above my cannister I have a shut off valve on the inlet side. I shut it off when I'm servicing the cannister. All it does is hold head pressure in the line and keeps all that tank water from adding to the confusion. The best part is I dont have to prime my setup when I re-assemble it - I just turn the valve and it primes itself.

Trust me, I've been there with the water all over everywhere.

I had shut off valves in the lines of my first canister filters...mag 350's...something like 20 years ago....lol I solved the 'reverse flow' problems with 2 differant colors of heat shrink tubing....green ..intake...blue outlet. (By the way... if you ever need a great...non-metallic...hose claamp...use shrink tubing from the electrical department and a hair dryer...

It happens...

I had the same thing happen to me recently with one of my XP3's. Went to do maintenance and forgot to open the quick release before opening up the canister, water started spraying all over me and the bottom of the stand. :nilly: I quickly closed it back up and grabbed a couple towels and a fan, luckily I didn't make to much of a mess. :irked:

Good to know I'm not alone on this one. Now I don't feel like a dumb ass for having water squirt all over me.:D Can somebody post a picture of the shut off valve? I would like to know what it looks like and where I can get it so I can get my UV hooked up the canister line.

Wolf, you're an aquarist genius. You seem to always have aquarium plumbing ideas up your sleeves.:)

Both my canisters have shut off valves. I shut them both, clean the canister and then I'm good.

keep doing maintenance like that Joe and you'll catch a buzz every time you do maintenance! :D

Nobody told me about the pressure build up either, but I just instinctively pulled off the quick disconnects slowly to let them drip dry before letting them hang below the stand.
