I am in process of switching my 125 gal over to a SA/CA tank. i already have 2 Emperor 400 on it which are going to stay but am also going to get another filter.

My question is which would be better to use a canister or a wet/dry filter?

My planned stocking scheme is
3 Uaru
5 Herotilapia multispinosa (Rainbow) Orange
2-3 Severums, Geos or possible others
eventually 1-2 Bichirs
and also my 6-7" albino Chocolate Pleco

It all comes down to personal preference. A lot of people prefer canisters, but I like sumps.

There is a lot of things you can do with a sump that you can't do with a canister. I'll take a sump over a canister any day, but both will get the job done.

If the tank is drilled, I'd go with a w/d, if not I'd run a big canister.

Well since the tank is not drilled and my wife would probably freak out if I took a drill to it then I guess a canister it is.

I already have an XP2 on my 75gal and like how it works. Would an XP4 be enough seeing that it will be supplemented with the two Emp 400's?

I'm not a fan of the XP canister. Personally I'd run dual 2217 eheims instead.

the only problem with that is the emerors are going to be working twice as much, if you can you want to get 2 of the same filters so one isn't working harder than the other. for instance i am setting up a 135 right now and put 2 eheim 2028's BUT i am going to have cichlids in it which get a bit messy as they grow.

up until now I have always kept my mbuna with 2-emperor 400's

my question was if he was suggesting the 2-eheims along with these 2?
