Canister Recommendation?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was thinking it was overkill too. some of the filter combo's recommend are great, but they could really be used on tanks 3x the size of the one we are talking about..

overkill is great, but on a 40g tank, it doesn't make sense to spend $300 for an Eheim and an AC110 in my opinion. doesn't make sense for a tank that size...

now, if you are planning on upgrading to a 125 in the future, thats different...

but if it were me, I would use a single AC110 or a Rena XP2.

a 40g doesn't need massive amounts of filtration..and its not worth spending tons of money if you don't really need to..

I have

Canisters:
1 Eheim 2213
2 Eheim 2234

Hang on:
1 Ac 110

Ac110 does a great job on large size tank, and they do clean up faster....

Eheim 2213 is faster than 2234, but 2234 is a newer model and you can control the flow rate.. where as 2213 is straight on filtration....

I do say that i prefer the Canister filter over hang on filters... But by far the best are fx-5 and Eheim 2260/62

HOWEVER.. seeing that your asking for a 40 gallon.. a simple AC-50 is very acceptable.. u dont need anything bigger...

But its the monster medium size tanks like 120g - 150 gallon u'll need ac110 or eheim canisters...

Then theres the monster size tanks... 180g-300g Fx-5 or Eheim 2260 is perfect..

Anything bigger.. i would just use a pool filter and not Fx-5...

I'm debating on either a XP3 or a XP2. I think I might end up with the XP3 though just because it has that extra basket for bio/mech, the extra 50GPH is just a bonus. That would mean I have exactly a 8.75 turn over rate.

Would that be a little to much for the 40 gallon? I don't want a river in there just a slight current, so that might be a little much...hmm
