Canned Trout

I was thinking that trout would be a cool fish to keep in an aquarium. Has anyone ever kept trout before? And with trout preffering cold water would you need a chilling system inorder to keep them happy?

ps. I understand that trout depending on species can reach 3' so there for I would need a very large tank.

Its possible and yes you do need a chiller. I would love to see this if you do it.

When/ if I can ever get the money and room for a 250-300g tank, putting in trout is what I think I would do. They are one of my favorite fish to catch, so why not keep some in a tank. I was thinking of using brook trout.

yea i remeber one guy on her or another fourm that kept trout his s/n was troutguy or something simular and i loved when he posted pics. i thing he had 2 or 3 trout in a 300 gal

They need to be kept at 65F or below and have a high O2 level so good pumps and a chiller are a must. Chillers are pretty easy to make and one of those 1.5 or 2 cu. ft. fridges work for up to a 200g tank, You can make one for $100-$150US that performs as well as the commercial ones that cost $600. If you are handy then an airconditioner unit can be converted and works much better.

From what I've read they also need a strong current with rocks/dw to dart behind for protection from the current. I'd definitely love to see pics if you get that going

They dont need current, they live in lakes, ponds, and moving water. In general, fish in lakes seem to grow bigger, faster, but rivers often hold higher populations. My uncle kept a brook trout at room temp for awhile, until his girlfriend got mad and dumped laundry detergent in the tank lol. He fed it goldfish and minnows.

I would start with a brown trout-they do not require the pristine conditions of a brook, should have better luck.

they dont need current however they do need to be constantly moving to move water over their gills, so its current or huge tank, ur choice.

also i think browns or brooks (or it could be another species...lol) prefere water in the high 60's like 65-72....so they are prolly ur best bet without a chiller.

QUICK CHILLER:
10-30 gallon tank in freezer with 1 1/2" pipe going in and out...........i used to have a 10 gal supplying to a 55 and it kept it about 58 degrees.....pretty good if ya ask me.
