I am planning a 150gal tank to move my red devil 7", jack dempsy 5.5", pike 8.5" and possibly adding another cpl of fish into. What are some good canister filters. I have 2 magnum 350's on my 90 gal. I was thinking of a fluval or an ehiem. :feedback:

Fluval FX5 is what I want to run on my 150, but currently I got a wet/dry sump and an Eheim Pro II.. forgot which model.

I would go with an FX5. I hear its a great filter and it pushes enough water for you to upgrade to a larger tank later. Plus its a great price for that much filtration.

go with an eheim, they have been around for 20 some years, and are rock solid. the fx5 has been out for less than a year. you make the choice:duh:

Its a real easy choice for a lot of people on this board and elsewhere (myself included) go with the Fluval FX5 why? save money get better performance :duh:

Its kinda hard to dismiss the positive responses from all those who have them....as for the year or less on the market? yeah so ? who wants to wait 20 years to prove you wrong -

i would do a wet dry personally me personally with all the pos feed back on the fx5 and me personally having nothing but problems from hagen products (not including aquaclear filter and powerhead) i would get the eheim i have had them and loved them still have one and its the greatest for the money i would rather buy the eheim but for a tank that large a wet dry would be your best bet

The Fx5 and the new Eheim Pro 3 have both been on the market for less than a year. Both are good filters, and their price ranges are nearly the same. I often see the pro 3 for less. I like the Pro 3 because it has more options for media. The fluval runs a lot of foam. As to save money get better performance, I do not agree. I think the Eheim runs better than the fluval.

While yes Eheim has been around a long time, they are still awesome at making filters. I like how they build their filters. I also like how Eheim builds theirs, I just prefer Eheim.

fluval fx5 has been rated excellent. i haven't had any experience on eheim but i heard a lot of great things about it. you might just need to choose from fluval or eheim. both have reputable names in the aquatic industries. if you want to save money check their specs on wattage consumption and filter medias. it's always the medias that kills your pocket not the unit itself (that's why i decided to get a wet/dry filter). good luck!:D

Eheim Pro III

CD-25535 Canister Filter $349.99

Eheim Pro III
* Aquarium canister filter boasts two inlet
and one outlet valve for large aquariums
* Fish filter with large prefilter and three media baskets
to customize filtration
* Aquarium canister filter moves 450 gallons per hour
on only 30 watts of power

Fluval

FX5 pump is rated at 950 gph and with baskets 607 GPH and now on the net for $209 dollars ( I would agree this is a low ball price, normally around $245)

I have yet to see Eheim close too or less than Fluvals FX5 prices....the media is totally in Fluvals price point favor -

I will use my LFS as my beta site between the two units - They clearly prefer the FX5 over Pro III and other models. They use the FX5 on both salt and fresh problematic tanks that are overstocked....they sell both

To each their own

Howdy,

The Fx5 and the new Eheim Pro 3 have both been on the market for less than a year.
Actually, the Pro 3 is now in its third year in Europe...

I think we had that discussion before ...

please don't forget the Eheims 2250 ($209) and 2260 (US $ 259) (e.g. at http://www.aquariumguys.com/eheimcanister.html )

Thus, the 2250, which is more than sufficient for a 150 gal, is the same price as the FX5 and offers great advantages over the FX5 (as does the 2260), which I mentioned in the above thread. Anyone interested can read up on it there
