Cannister filter for 150gal tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

Actually, the Pro 3 is now in its third year in Europe...

I think we had that discussion before ...

please don't forget the Eheims 2250 ($209) and 2260 (US $ 259) (e.g. at http://www.aquariumguys.com/eheimcanister.html )

Thus, the 2250, which is more than sufficient for a 150 gal, is the same price as the FX5 and offers great advantages over the FX5 (as does the 2260), which I mentioned in the above thread. Anyone interested can read up on it there

Its good to see Eheim lower their prices and I also see Fluval has as well !! Somebody somewhere must be suffering from pricing pressure and possible market errosion

As for the model you mentioned below - I dont see them in the performance arena with the FX5 (see below) so they really arent a bargin even at the same price IMO.
The ability to move volumes of water faster seems to be a distinct advantage here, and is clearly in Fluvals Fx5 favor.

The Eheim 2260 Canister Filter's powerful pump coupled with the large volume canister and correct filter media arrangement, guarantees the highest effectiveness and above average service life. This large capacity external filter is for aquariums up to approximately 400 gallons with a maximum pump performance of 396 gph.

The Eheim 2250 Canister Filter's powerful pump coupled with the large volume canister and correct filter media arrangement, guarantees the highest effectiveness and above average service life. This large capacity external filter is for aquariums up to approximately 264 gallons with a maximum pump performance of 264 gph and a head of 6 foot and 7 inches

I found some very unhappy Eheim owners specifcally on the 2260 series

I didnt even try to looks for these....I would imagine I could find a boat load if I actually tried

:naughty:
have you ever owned an EHEIM? you seem to know alot about them. by the way, flow rate has nothing to do with filter quality.the real performance is in the filtration media capicity. if you haven't noticed, the eheim's are huge.:WHOA:

I almost did own a Eheim for my tank (220)...If the Fluval FX5 was not released when it was - Im sure I would be in possession of an Eheim. I saw them in action - thankfully my LFS went over both of them at the time. Im thankful for that for the time to carefully go through each product - then I made my own decision.

I strongly feel flow rate is actually more important, than slow limbering water flows. For my applications the faster rate I had - the healthier everybody was. I need to circulate the water, still do. My LFS also is convinced on this -
Regarding the FX5 it may or may not have more or less bio but either way it has more than enough for its rated capacity. The flow rate makes it all come together just fine...

I hear RENA is releasing a product to compete with both Fluvals FX5 and Eheim series.
Think about how cool that is for everybody in the hobby? one year ago it was clearly a one horse show (Eheim) now there are 3 solid Mfg options to choose from....
Its a win/win for all as you already see price drops just between the two already...
They will get so cheap that a new unit can be the spare parts :)

Great news for us, isn't it

True, it seems that way. And indeed, for mechanical filtration, high turnover of the tank yields best results. Biofiltration, however, occurs in an optimum flow range. Too much or too little flow, and your bacteria get (literally) washed away or suffocate. Biofiltration still occurs, but at lower rates than theoretically possible. That is clearly the reason why Eheim hasn't upgraded their pums to higher flow rates but sticks to their workhorses which reliably perfuse the media at a constant, optimum rate. Due to that as well as their massive media capacity, Eheims 2250 and 2260 are leaders in biofiltration.

That guy's post clearly reflects that he didn't know what he wanted before he bought it. The 22 series is a 20-year-old design. Proven for reliability, but it clearly has fewer bells and whistles than new designs. IMO Nothing you can't take care of with a few extra parts (e.g. the valves or quick-disconnect).
I don't see the point you're trying to make. Once the filter is in place and running, that guy will love it - and probably forget to post about it because he has better things to do.

Different poster in the same thread mentioned his Eheim leaked
another guy wished it had baskets...most hated the hoses...

The point being? Just because its an old design, doesnt mean it dosent have problems or its a good design.
Its that glass house thing again  bashing Fluval for their problems in the past and you turn around and Eheim has the same problems. :D

Who the heck wants a 20 year old design anymore? I would say todays cars are better than 20 years ago for example....I sure as chit dont want a 20 year old design (1980's era)...
I prefer technology over same old dont change a thing design....Right now the FX is the flavor of the month or year. Tomorrow is could be something else....

What ever it is dont take it to heart guys....
