I've got a 75 gallon tank with a single large Jack Dempsey. I'm planning on putting a con with him pretty soon and want to get into a canister filter. Right now I'm running an AC110 and an AC70 and while I love these filters and they are doing a good job I like the cleaner look of a single intake and outake from a cannister.

An FX5 sounds nice, but it's a little out of my budget. What other can's would you guys recommend. I was looking at the XP2 but 300GPH seems a bit low so I was thinking a single XP3.

Also how are the cascade can's? I've done a little research and they seem to be pretty awesome for the price but I'd like to get an opinion from someone who has been running one long term.

Thanks

eBay has pretty good deals on fx5's. Rena xp4 is good too, cascade are junk in my opinion. I would recommend Eheim but if your on a budget it's not an option. You could do a sump, it would still give you that clean look that you get from canisters and if you make one yourself its cheap. Are you planning to run the canister with the ac's or are you planning to slowly take the ac's off and only have a canister running?

I plan on taking the AC's off, I'm going to put them on a new tank. I've got a bunch of media that's been sitting in another tank for probably 3 months now so I was planning on transferring it over to the canister.

The xp4 actually sounds good and will give me a little more flow and is in my price range. I'm wanting to stay under $200 and I can get an xp4 for ~$175 so maybe that's what I'll do.

What all media are you running in yours aquaman? I was planning on running scrubbies, biomax, and sponges on the top.

bottom basket has the 20ppi and 30 ppi foam, 2nd basket has 2 layers of bonded filter bad, 3rd basket has bio chem stars, top basket has bio chem zorb that i replace every few months and a polishing pad. I can go a few months w/o opening up the filter and not lose flow. since you have big cichlids, more frequent cleanings might be needed
