I will be starting a couple projects here soon, one is making a stand and canopy for my 75G tank. And eventually one for the 300G I will be getting. What would you recommend to seal the under side of the canopy with?

i am using high gloss paint and water proof primer on my canopy i am also putting in an acrylic pannel between the lights and the rest of the canopy.

I would think just about any finish rated for outdoor use would also be fine. Just be sure whatever you use is fully cured so that any fumes given off while drying/curing won't affect your aquarium buddies.

I always use several coats of spar varnish after the wood is stained.

I don't plan on staining the underside of the canopy, as it's not really visible. I was thinking of a high-gloss white. That way some more light is reflected off the canopy and back to the tank. Also, part of the top will have mirrors attached for my reflectors.

As for fans, will definitely have them. Looking at 3 fans in the top blowing out, and having vents in both sides. Should be more than enough.

I just don't want to use anything that if I do get any condensation buildup, that any water dripping back down to the tank will be safe, and not have anything bad in it.

at the large home centers, they sell a sheet foam insulation that is covered in a reflective type mylar on one side, it reflects nicely and is easily cut to fit the canopy with a razor blade.....

That could be a possibility as well. I was also thinking of just gluing on mylar as well, or a similar product from the hobby store. Thanks for the input everyone, lots of good ideas to think about...

A canopy is the whole unit that sits on the top of the main tank, which includes the lighting, plexi cover that protects the lights from water splatter, etc. Some have doors on the front that swing open, and others have a front that raises up to open the tank for maintenance, feeding, etc.

I will be making the canopy so that it is also escape proof, so the fire eels I get won't be able to get out. Will be closed on all sides, with the canister filter intake and outputs going through holes drilled specifically for them.
