Canopy vs Glass Tops

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I got a cat and glass tops on my 90 and 55 in the living room. I love my glass tops :) The cat is also very curious.

Glass tops will work just fine. I would still use glass tops even if you have a canopy as it helps to stop evaporation in from your tank. I have found that the all glass tops are a bit thicker than the perfecto/marinland ones.

canopies look nice and make the tank look like furniture. i've been dealing with the same issue. i'm considering getting a guy to make me one, also. i don't want to spend the money either. but, my glass tops are made of heavy duty pieces of glass. they will support a kitten's weight. i also have 2 cats and mine don't jump up on the tank. they do stare at it, but they can't get up that high. it will probably pass, as the kittens grow.

i do have a canopy on my 55 gal and it matches my black stand. it's very attractive. the guy whom i purchased the tank off of designed and built the canopy. he did a fine job. i can change water easily and don't have to remove the canopy. plus, i always have a glass top on my tanks. the canopy is for aesthetics. the glass top keeps the fish in and reduces evaporation. i suggest using both a glass top and canopy, if you can afford both.

when you go with versa glass, just make sure the plastic brackets come with it & are sturdy enough. I suspect you would be getting 3 panels? so the middle panel will be supported by front/back tank frame & middle bracket whereas the left & right end pcs will be supported by 3 tank frames.

also then you can get 2 lighting units for left & right side of tank. not sure how long a 150g is (6' ?) then you can get 2 36" units (T5's I think many recommend) & easier to move one shorter unit than 1 big 6' unit (unless they don't make 6' lights).
