You can consider adding a bag of aragonite sand or oyster shells to help buffer for KH/GH to prevent your system from crashing. You don't need a whole lot, just enough to add stability to the system.

I agree. The use of Zeolite is a great recommendation. It's relatively cheap, often more so than carbon, and removes far more compounds than carbon. It also takes longer to exhaust and can be recharged (only read about recharging). If you use enough it will get your ammonia down
