Drop nitrates and phosphates as close to zero as possible.

This is different to what I have found by researching my infestation. My nitrates are 0, and I have loads of the stuff, I was told it can be caused by lack of nitrates (especially in planted tanks) so increasing nitrates by dosing KNO3 can work. I might be totally insane, but it's just what I've read. (And mine has improved from covering everything to covering half the tank since dosing) What are your readings for nitrate?

Yes correct. I've had it pop up in tanks with zero nitrates too.

But it also can pop up in tanks with elevated organics and phosphates...

It's tricky for sure. 3 billion years old makes it a very resilient bacteria...

My native tank had some pretty aggressive algae. Dark green, everywhere. I turned the lights off for about 5 days and then brought them back on at 4 hrs/day. It's cut back on it hugely.

I also keep Erimyzon sucetta (lake chubsucker) and every time I pass by the tank they are ripping on it. Don't know how effective they are at actually consuming it, but they are trying really hard around the clock!

I had the problem pretty bad too until I accidentally introduced some pond snails to my tank, and they kept it under control after that.....but then I had a pond snail problem :)
