Like the title says, Im just finishing up my 55. Im going to have a 4'' grammode divided with a either a juvi beani or islantum.
I have been searching for a "green islantum" but have been having no luck, so if it came down to it. Would you get a "red" islantum or a cream beani?

Dan @ Cichlidsoftheamericas.com has both red and green F1 Istlanum. I just ordered mine from them.

Decided to get Istlanum instead of Beani or Grammodes because it seems that those two are very skittish/shy.

Awesome, I will be getting some green ones if he has some more left then. Will you post some pics of yours when they arrive. Did you decide on green or red?

I prefer the red istlanum. I have a juvie right now but i just put my order in for 4 beanis from rapps. Hands down Rapps has the best fish.

Ya he def has great fish, but he does not have the green islantum right now, I figure if i do order a beani, I probably need to order a few because they are so prone to bloat.

Believe it or not, many of the fish from Rapps, Dan, Gage and other vendors here come from the exact same sources, or at least from related parents. I think many of the Red Istlanum in circulation right now can be traced back to the wild caught specimens brought into the hobby by the MFK member JoeFatFish in 2009. They were collected in Rio Amacuzac, Mexico and then sold to different members that bred em and distributed the fry. You don't think they all just travel to Central America every month to collect their own, right? So we can't just say "Rapps" has the best fish, because we don't even know if his fry came from the same batch as everyone else's. Right now he doesn't even have festae and Dan has wild caught fry from Rio Tumbes, same for Green Istlanum. They all offer great quality fish and have good deals from time to time.

@pckts, I ordered a group of both green and red because the pictures I saw online didn't help me decide. I will raise both and choose the ones I like best.

@ cacichlids, Seems like the smart move. Have you ever heard any truth to the rumor that the greens get bigger than the reds? Read it on a forum a while back and never saw anything about it since.

I believe Mel had a male that was 13" or 14". So yeah, they get big. Probably takes a couple of years tho for them to reach that size.
