Can't Find Species for 55 Gallon I Like

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What is your water like? Hardness + pH?
If you like uaru, how about festivums? Similarly shaped, peaceful SA cichlids. Could do a few with a school of tetras and corys/ottos for a full south American community. These will do better in softer water.
If your water is harder, CA cichlids might be a better move. The smaller CA cichlids in the convict family are some of my favorite fish. Most species would work as a small group in a 55 gallon, with some livebearers for dithers. Amatitlania Myrnae or Nanoluteus would be a couple good species.

What about a trio of Neolamprologus tretacephaleus? They look similar to fronts but should only get to 6 inches.

2 great suggestions. Ty for the help

Red congo puffers are awesome they are bright red agressive and predatory and get to about 6 inches.

Black ghost knife fish
Only usually get 10 inches in captivity enjoy planted aquariums

Silver datnoids only get 12 inches and would be fine in a 55 gallon

Short body red tail catfish 12 nches max awesome fish to keep.

Payara are very predatory and get 12 inches in captivity

Red bellied pirhana max size 12 inches insanely agredsive and will eat anything that comes into the tanj thats not a pirhana

this is the most stupid thing ive heard. an sb rtc maxing out at 12". a friend of mine has an sb rtc and its well over 80cm and prob 40cm wide.

and payara 12" you must live in fantasyland or something.

if you got offended by this answer well thats not by any means my intentions but please stop giving advice like this.

id say for a 55 a school of some nice tetra and maybe some gymnogeophagus species. perhaps a small group of pictus cats

Could maybe try rainbow cichlids they should top out at about 5 inches

Except that rainbow cichlids I've seen over the years have almost never looked that good...
Whenever I grow them and try to color them up I get a brown fish with nicely colored eyes.

I just grabbed a pic from google, I figured these were breeding colors.

I could have sworn when I seen them in a store they were the yellow color with redish highlights

I have Honduran red points and they are way more pretty than I can capture in pics, same with my angelfish. Those would both be good candidates for a 55g as well (though not that different)

Toxotes microlepis is a very intersting fish that I am keeping in my 55, maxes out at 5.9 inches. All the fun of an archerfish that doesn't get big at all. https://www.aqua-imports.com/shop/ gets them in regularly.
