Can't get rid of this Brown Water!!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just set up a 125 gal with 2 large pieces of MOPANI wood. I pre-soaked both for a week in buckets. My tank has been brown for the past 4 days, but it gets lighter daily. It went from almost a tea color to a slight yellow hue. i'm just trying to wait it out. I have a fx5 pumping at full force with charcoal in it. it's kind of good to know that others have experienced the same thing and that in due time, the tank will be crystal clear. thanks all!!!

I'm surprised no one thought of mentioning using Activated Carbon? when i had my old tank with a piece of reasonably large wood that kept leeching tannins i added a pouch of activated carbon to my filter and it cleared up the water in a few days...

Although with that being said, you will need to replace it as it states on the package, but definitely did the job for me when i had problems...

Thanks for the tips.... still soaking.

I have been soaking tons of wood I collected in the woods for almost a year now and the water still turns brown.

My roommate has had a piece of mopani wood for almost the same amount of time and it still turns the water brown after a couple of weeks.

Tannins will always leech from your wood, but the rate slows down after time. Just do water changes. It really isn't harmful to your fish at all except that it may lower your pH over time. I built a display tank based on a local river system and I keep it tannic to preserve the natural setting, the various organisms love it!
