You aren't overthinking. It is always good to plan ahead, yer just thinking in the wrong direction. For a backup to the overflow, you want another overflow not a pump. The safest way is to drill the tank.

Agreed... You wouldn't want your filtration shutting off if you have a problem.. I would want the System to keep running. If you wanted to be safe just add in extra overflows... perhaps a second return as well if your looking to have a bullet proof system... if something fails then you have something else to take over.
