Being pretty isolated down here in NZ we're a little out of the loop on this kinda thing. A couple of weeks ago I received an email from Aquarium Glaser in Germany saying they had captive bred Altums available, and it got me wondering about the possibility of being able to import* some once my wallet has recovered from the 2000L tank build!

So, how commonly available are captive bred young Altum angels in your part of the world, and what sort of price do they usually go for? The reason I ask about captive bred instead of wild caught is A; the small size makes shipping more efficient and B; they are supposedly a lot hardier than the wild caught specimens, which is a good thing when being posted half way round the world.

*note, importing fish into New Zealand is an expensive and complicated process, it isn't just a case of ordering them and waiting for them to arrive. First you need an importer/quarantine facility willing to help, then you need to buy enough fish from where ever you're ordering to make the shipping and fixed quarantine costs worth while (otherwise they fast become very expensive fish), and once you've got all that sorted you need enough keen people to put up some cash to make the shipment happen. It isn't impossible, and such special orders have been done many times before with asian arowana and wild discus (over and above the regular imports of "standard" aquarium fish), but it certainly isn't easy...

They are becoming more common now. Tony Tan is producing them in Asia and there are a few people in Germany breeding them. I got some of the Tony Tan fish a year or so ago and they were definitely very hardy and tough compared to imported wild altums.

Several people who received tank-bred altums are now seeing spawning activity among their F1/F2 fish. It takes altums a few years to reach maturity (at least 2) so people are just starting to see their tank-raised altums pair and spawn. This should mean even more availability in the near future.

Ours went for $25 - 50 a piece, and were only a few mm in size (probably 10 - 15 week old angels). It's a bit pricey, but coming from the discus hobby it doesn't sound totally unreasonable.

Know there is one place in the states here offers F1s. I would suggest getting them from a reputable breeder if they are going to have to go thru those qt processes. I personally learnt my lesson buying "altums" on aquabid.com, bought them (F4's) on a whim at a low price with no picture provided. Ended up receiving regular angels at a high price after talking to the person over about 5 or so emails... To say the least I learnt my lesson not to trust anyone, and not spend my money like a idiot.

I never come across them but as the poster above stated Tony Tan is breeding them along with a few others. Mine are WC and the price around here is between $25 & $125 depending on size. As with all F1 fish they should be more forgiving and adaptable than there wild cought parents. I wouldn't hesatate getting some F1's.

All good feedback, hopefully by the time I've got some money they shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of!

I know David at angelfishusa.com imports Tony Tan fish and got some F1 altums a while back(maybe a year), but I think he got all adults & kept them in an attempt to breed. I'm not sure if he has had any success though.

There are 4 or 5 breeders world wide so I would not call them easy to get a hold of. I know David at Angelfishusa imports them once and a while and is trying to start his own breeding program. My advice would be to buy all you can afford next time he gets some in.

Not sure why I'd buy fish from Asia via the US, but interesting to know that there's only that few a breeders world wide!

Because that's how the fish biz works these days. Is anyone in NZ importing Tony tan altums or captive breed altimeter from Europe?

altum season is just around the corner. they should be available at your selective fish store. or ask them to get them in for you. since you're in NZ i dont think u will be seeing F1's anytime soon unless u know people who will import them in from asia. and i believe the captive bred ones were going for like $45 usd each. and i personally like the wild caught ones better then the F1's. they just look better. with that said a big group of altums would look amazing in your big tank. another options are wild peruvians. they also look nice and easy to keep
