captive hystrix or wild?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm all in favour of bringing in WC bloodlines, any day of the week in terms of breeding, the gene pool needs refreshing for sure. But CB are considered to have Better markings down the generations along with no parasites and feeding on pellets etc etc.
Agreed. Captive bred ploys look deformed because of the inbreeding happening. They'd probably make decent sandwiches if they were anymore inbred.

Just recently got 3 CB hystrix shipped from Spotfin. They ate the day I got them, and have amazing markings. And they were $200 ea. Yea saving up for them sucked but I dont need to worry about them having issues.

On the flip side, I brought a trio or four, honestly can't remember now, of WC hystrix From Richard, which were quarantined and treated and feeding well on worms before he'd sell them to me - his standard practice. I raised them over nearly two years, no issues, they were fussy eaters at times and not all would break off worms or prawns onto pellets. But I raised them to breeding age and they were amazing, my most favourite rays I've ever had. Sadly I sold them in a great deal which I regret really but hey ho. Moral of this particular post is you can buy healthy WC and not have much trouble at all with them as long as you buy WC from a reputable source that quarantines correctly. You could save a little money this way in the initial purchase yes, but I'd still favour CB for all the well known reasons.

If I remember correctly , I had one of ur previously owned females , and she was defo a fussy eater , where as captive bred , will more then likely eat a veriety of food it's worth the extra money just for this

Guess im gonna have to stsrt with one and buy another when i can afford it. These will be the only fish in the tank i have decided. Which sex should i get first as intend to breed and may be 6-7 months befotr i can get enough together for another

Yes one female that I sold on her own did end up back at wharf, she would only ever eat worms and that was it I couldn't break her on to anything else at all, not sure if anyone had success. Out of the other three one male from the get go ate pellets and everything else offered, the other male wasn't too fussy and went on to take pellets and the other female would only eat pellets if they were concealed in prawn or mussel, she ate all other food. But then if you get CB pups they normally been offered pellets from day one and will take all foods.
