One source states that bowfin only reach about 14 inches in captivity. I assume this is in less-than-optimal conditions, then? Let's just pretend I could legally have one. ;) What kind of accommodations would be necessary in reality? Would a bowfin, in fact, continue to grow over time and be a 'tankbuster'? I have a 125g that one bowfin could, in theory, be placed into with an Oscar. I'd call that a killer combo.

all fish in captivity should reach wild max sizes if not more...i have seen many bowfin in the 36"+ range...if you were to accidentaly find one in your tank that is what you should expect;)

Shoot. Really? I should have known it was too good to be true. Maybe I should start up the 300g pond in the basement after all...

atleast till they forget the hindering factor...as some socal people have a simmilar deal...;)

what's up with this winking and winking? like this ;)

they grow way larger than 14 inches i can tell u that. im growing mine out first, then he;s going in my 400 gal stock tank outside. these guys get huge. don't get one from tfd they are too small and are very fragile at that size. Sometimes, the fry just randomly die too ( idiopathic death). once they're over 6 inches, they are tanks, and are very resilient.

these fry are very fragile. feed bloodworms 3 to 4 times a day, keep good water flow and cover them as much as possible with low or no lighting and some kind of hide to reduce stress. make sure they are in a small enough area to find their food and make sure they have access to the surface to breath at all times. oh yeah, dont heat the tank...
