Just looked it up on FishBase, both Caquetaia umbrifera and Caquetaia umbriferum link to Caquetaia umbrifera so I would guess that is the proper name.

Valid as *Petenia umbrifera* (Meek & Hildebrand 1913) -- (Burgess 2000:56 [ref. 24818] as *umbriferum*, Miller 2005:373 [ref. 28615]). Valid as *Cichlasoma umbriferum* Meek & Hildebrand 1913 -- (Conkel 1993:132 [ref. 22949]). Valid as *Caquetaia umbrifera* (Meek & Hildebrant 1913) -- (Kullander in Reis et al. 2003:620 [ref. 27061]). Type catalog: Ibarra & Stewart 1987:26 [ref. 12367].

the ending of the species name changes as the species changes from one genus to another. It looks from what Vitaliy posted and what I've just read on the cichlid room companion, the species was originally described as a Cichlasoma species which made it umbriferum. when the species was moved to Petenia and then to Caquetaia the ending of the species name changed. It has to do with the "gender" of the genus name but don't ask me how that's determined.

That's also why you may see labiatus/labiatum/labiata for a red devil depending on which genus it's being connected to and there are hundreds of other examples. :)

I still have the same pair of Convicts my hobby started with. :)

Wow!! My 1st tropicals were clown loaches. If I still had them they'd be 42 years old. ANd, probably as big as mini-coopers.

Does anyone have pics of large umbies? I've only recently started keeping this genus with a bunch of C. myersi. (actually, they're P-P's. But, I have the key to the hatchery)

OMG!! Thanks. I can't believe that 20" male. Are his colors the norm for the species? I may have to rethink a couple of 260s.
OK, I'm more an oddball fish and tang person. Pretty novice at CA/SA cichlids beyond Geophagus. Are umbies 1-fish-to-a-tank species, better off as pairs, trios, etc.?

Note: Just realized that I must really be getting excited over this species because this is the 1st time I've asked a 'how-to' type question on these boards. So...

Solo species. Males are desperately hard to get in a batch of fry but Rapps will sex them(guessing to the best of his ability). I say this because males are the ones who get 24", females maxing out at 14" or so. Think Dovii when thinking of attitude from what I've heard at adult size. But Umbies in general are untolerant of tankmates even from a juvi size.

There are some videos on that site you should check out too. Also Aquamojo has a male umbie, and of course Rapps has a breeding pair(I think).

I have a small one now from Rapps. It has the blue mustache, blue under the eyes and all the other male traits but it's a waiting game til later.

BTW, those colors above are the norm but that fish is a descendent of one of the first brought in. If I remember right that fish was for sale a while back and you don't want to know the asking price.

Hopefully those will be mine soon :naughty:

Yeah, definitely a solo species. You don't typically want tankmates for something that can reach 24" :naughty:.

I've heard of people here saying that they've had batch after batch of umbies from Rapps without a male in the group, but you need to remember that they get pretty big, so it'll take longer for them to mature, and sex, unless you vent, which I have no idea how to do. Just like other animals, you pretty much have a 50-50 shot at a male.
