I have a blown 6x9 in my wife's grand am. The car came with the monsoon system which is wired for components off the factory amp. A couple of years back I went against my better judgment and bought a jvc head unit because my buddy swore up and down that he's never had a problem with them, I knew he's cheap and shouldn't have taken his advice but did. I would prefer to use the factory amp instead of the head units amp. I haven't built a system in about 10 years and can't remember how the bass stacks up between 6.5" speakers and a 6x9", will I miss bass by switching from 6x9 to components?

I think you would be fine putting a 6.5 back there. I use to compete in sound quality events before switching to this hobby. I only had 2 horns a pair of 6.5's and 2 subs. Only problem is if anyone sits back there the music won't be that good. Why not try locating a wrecking yard and buy a factory 6x9. Or buy a pair from best buy. Less work to mount it if it is the same size.

Crutchfield is another option for new speakers.

I could go the factory route but if I get a 6x9 from Best Buy I have to use the head unit to power the speaker or modify the speaker factory wiring. I am hoping to use the factory amp which has built in cross-overs for highs and lows which is I am interested in the components. If I had a Kenwood or Alpine head unit I would probably just get new 6x9s, but I'm not happy with the quality of the JVC head unit once its half way turned up. Crutchfield has plates for mounting components in a 6x9 opening that come with the speakers and if I buy else where I can just make my own(I'm like a surgeon with a sawzall).

In my last car(10 years ago) I had a real nice multi-amp set-up where every speaker had its own purpose so I'm not familiar with how some things sound for full range.

I love JVC...have had a good number of them and never any problems. Now my favorite...used to be Panasonic, but they got behind with the technology and now don't even make any head units anyway. 6 1/2" components make for better sound, but 6x9's make for better bass...if you have a good amp pushing them. I would just get rid of the rears and get a sub. If I do a whole system, I get rid of the rears anyway. If you want some bass and don't want to get a sub, replace the 6x9's. I don't mean to be rude about it, but the Monsoon system kind of sucks.

When you had JVC did you run your speakers of the hu or off an amp? For the money I would probably be happy with the JVC if I wasn't using it to power any speakers. The Monsoon has nothing on a well built custom system but its not bad for my purposes and a lot cleaner than the jvc hu. My biggest problem with replacing the speaker is that all I want to do is replace the speaker, I don't want to fall into the I've got $500 into the system I might as well spend another $2,000 trap again.

I've done both...off the h/u and with amps. Currently I'm running stock speakers off of it, so I can't really say anything about my current "system" which only consists of a sub. I am running a JVC h/u in my truck w/ stock speakers up front and 6x9's in boxes behind the seat. The Monsoon systems are better than the Bose ones at least. Since you're insistent on just replacing the speakers, I'd stick w/ 6x9's if you're worried about the bass. They're going to put out a lot more than a 6 1/2"...about equivalent to an 8" sub in surface area, although probably not as clean. I totally understand about the what's just a little more money, loll.

I wound up going with Rockford fosgate 6x9 they were $100 and had the best reviews of anything under $300
The component idea crashed after I stumbled upon that the monsoon amp has 2ohms for the rear subs and 4ohmsfor everything else, I was tired of liking and didn't want to start a new search for separate woofers and tweeters.
