hey guys!:D Ive noticed that many people spray paint the back of their glass tanks to give it a better look. I was just wondering if you can use car tint for the same reason. thanks!

*shrug*, I don't see why not.

Just seems easier to spray paint than to get the tint on right.

If you think you can get it on ok though go for it.

why not? and if it doesn't suit your taste...remove it.. nobody does it to the inside of the tank, so what you do to the outside, unless poisonous won't affect the inhabitants anywise...

It's fine. Apply it to the outside and it works well. I was going to do it to my larger tanks but the standard roll is too short.

spray soapy water on the tank and the tint, squeegee the soapy water out and it'll look perfect. I think it would actually be easier than painting. (No masking/worrying about overspray).

Not to mention tint film is designed to be applied on one side only. If you've ever looked out of a car window that's tinted, it's lighter looking out than looking in. So even really dark tint applied to the outside back of the tank, it will be lighter than you thought. Tint the front, that's cool buddy.
Just paint it.

Um, I had a latex painted tank, and it was a ***** to get it off. Most of it didn't even come off.

What's wrong with the black back paper you can buy for like 50 cents at art store?

I had the same idea, just haven't wanted to take my whole tank apart and move it away from the wall to do it. How in the heck do you get the fish tank backing stuff to stay in place anyways?

I know a guy that does this :) but he gets it practically free :) Paint is cheaper for some applications.

I cut thin sheet of plexi to fit the rear...or side... of the tank I'm working on and then paint that rather than the tank. A VERY thin coat of silicone around the outer edge holds it in place and keeps water out. You can mask off portions if you like and then paint the back side in a transperant paint for a nice effect and even add stick on graphics or letters for a custom look. (Imagine a nice flame job on a FH or RD tank)

The main reason I love doing it this way is that it's so simple to change or even move from tank to tank...(same diamentions of course)

You CAN get some really nice window tint in wide enough and long enough rolls as well as some VERY nice effects in the window treatment section of most home improvement stores. Theres a stained glass effect one that would look STUNNING if it was backlit...
