carbon bad?

On one side of my Emperor 400; I cut the foam for an Aquaclear 500, 110 to fit with Nylon pot scrubbers fit in to fill the rest of it up.

On the other I use the media tray that comes with Emp 400, filled with filter floss and filling in the empty spaces more pot scrubbers.

So it does'nt hurt to leave an old manufacters carbon filter element in? I mean just rinse of the scum and reuse.

If anyone is interested I think I know where to get penguin filters that are empty, just the blue material in the right shape. Only reason I say I think I know is I didn't check if they had all the sizes but I got one for my 110, can't remember the price but it was under $5
