carbon bags

I'm the same way. I dont use carbon at all unless its needed, which isnt very often. I have a few brand new carbon bags in a cabinet that will probably stay there for a very long time.

In the filters that use carbon bags I either slit open the bags then replace the carbon with lava rock fragments or I cut a filter pad to fit. I am leery of carbon with cichlids due to hith and it just doesn't last long anyway so by replacing it I gain a bit of mechanical filtration and add some substrate for additional bacterial growth resulting in more biofiltration.
