carbon filtration on large systems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes, I have definitely noticed a difference in water color and smell with the carbon. It really does need to be changed once a month if you are using it though. It is useless after a month.

thanks for all the input. I ordered 50 lbs of carbon and some small mesh bags should get it next week, hopefully that will solve my problem or at-least help it.

Carbon is great! But may I recommend if you are going to use bags of carbon that you place them in your system/sump somewhere where water pours over them. This will reduce detritus build-up and greatly increase the life of your carbon. If you let bags of carbon sit submerged it creates anaerobic pockets in the middle and becomes ineffective rather quickly.

Here are some rules for using carbon if you want to get really scientific :) :

Typically, about 1 cubic inch of activated
filter carbon can provide chemical filtration of
2 gallons of water for up to a month.

An approximate ratio is 1 gram = 100 m2
of surface area (Hoehn, 1996).

Not so, if you bake it at 2500 degrees you can use it again!!:D

Really? Thats cool. I love fun factoids like that:D
Actually it's 800-1000 C but I dont have a oven that goes that high. There's people on a home brewing forum that boil it a few times then rinse and put it in the oven on high for 4 hours and then rinse again:eek: but after all that electric usage you might be cheaper to get 50 lbs for 90.00 out here.
