Keeping clean filter media is a much better idea then carbon. I know its sucky to have to open up a canister filter but think about yhe statement your making about how horrible it smells after 5 or 6 weeks. Sounds like it may have a lot of garbage in it that is packing the mechanical filtration full beyond it's resl recommended limits. I never use carbon unless I use medications. Quality mechanical filtration can give you Crystal clear water just as good or better then anything. Plus if clean or change it soon enough it helps lower nitrate and dissolved organics. Carbon does have some signs of evidence that point to it being a factor on many cases for Hole in the head disease when used for durations. It has its uses, but to keep all the time or for durations isn't needed. Just added $$$.
