Nothing is a must
wrong! water is a must, even if the fish can breath air it will need a mist every once in a while.

lol

carbon really depends on what you have. It is not a must but does help with certain things. So with out getting complicated it really depends on what you have and what you plan to have.

The best thing is to just establish your tank and have the proper filtration. If everything is set up right you wouldn't need carbon. Your just adding chemicals that aren't necessary. The carbon isn't going to fix the problem only temporally mask it, if it even does that.

i use it only B/C i use HOB filters and they typically have carbon in the filter cartridges. once i get an ac110 or ac70 i will not add carbon

I use seachem Matrix Carbon and love it. Keeps the water polished quite well. Although besides removing meds and or polishing water it serves no purpose.
On the same page you could say to the 99% of us monster fish keepers who have 10X turnover that it serves no purpose and you only need enough filtration to keep the ammonia and nitrite to 0 . But being a monster fish keeper I carry the train of thought to my chemical filtration... More than neccesary just like my turnover and UV and all the goodies we all love to have.:D
