Hi,

I have been using carbon for a while, but I read that it is linked to HITH....

I have removed all carbon from my filters and I'm looking for an alternative.

(I don't want suggestions of more water changes because I can't afford to do more than I do,I live on tank water, and I have had a very dry summer and only have 1/4 tank (8-9000l) left)

I was thinking of using a mix of purigen and hypersorb, has anyone used these..

Should I use only purigen, or only hypersorb, or should I mix them both together in the required amounts for my tank?

Any advice is thanked!

I used carbon for a decade and never had any issues. A few year s back I switched to purigen since its regenerable and absolutely love the stuff. I looked into hypersorb and walked away with the impression that it was the precursor to purigen.

I was under the impression they did different things.purigen leaning more towards colors and dyes, hypersorb was more like carbon...

I'll throw another vote in for purigen, I run it in hob's and canisters and soon in a sump. When I discovered it a few years ago I said goodbye to carbon.

The only time I use carbon now is if I have to dose meds.

Purigen didn't work with high flow rates though does it so how does it work in a canister with over 1000l per hour?

I run it (2x 100ml bags) in my FX5's and only change it out for freshly recharged material every 3 months or so. I'm not completely covering an entire section of my filter with it; so it doesn't really effect my flow rate at all.

Ok, the first thing you need to clarify is what is your goals? Sounds to me like your trying to find a chemical filtration like the ones you have listed to reduce water changes. If that's the case NONE of these will do that. If you fully understand the nitrogen cycle then you know what we remove when doing water changes is nitrate. Excessive amounts are harmful. Carbon, purigen and hypersorb all remove things like medications, impurities and chemicals from the water till they are saturated. Then they must be replaced or recharged. But they won't do what water changes do. You would have to use a large high performing plant filtration set up to reduce nitrates or a anaerobic filtration unit. Even then it won't do it all. Part of the deal in keeping creatures in size restricted environments.

I've used all 3 you mentioned with no issues of hith or anything. You do have to stay on top of changing or recharging the media. It can work just fine in high flow situations as well with no issues.

Hi,

Nothing to do with water changes, i completely understand the cycle and i am mainly looking for removal of tanning, odors etc

i have anerobic filtration chambers in my tank, custom built of course but they work well
I've used all 3 you mentioned with no issues of hith or anything.

as I said before I am looking to remove tannin, odors and get that polished look that carbon gives without using carbon! I have currently got purigen in a reactor in line with my eheim 2217 and it does not seem to discolour as it should when i reaches capacity, it has been in there 3 months and not changed one bit!!

do you have any advice as to why it is not working? or does it not have to discolour before it needs recharged?
