Hi,

Nothing to do with water changes, i completely understand the cycle and i am mainly looking for removal of tanning, odors etc

i have anerobic filtration chambers in my tank, custom built of course but they work well
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Head_and_lateral_line_erosion please read the section on cure...

as I said before I am looking to remove tannin, odors and get that polished look that carbon gives without using carbon! I have currently got purigen in a reactor in line with my eheim 2217 and it does not seem to discolour as it should when i reaches capacity, it has been in there 3 months and not changed one bit!!

do you have any advice as to why it is not working? or does it not have to discolour before it needs recharged?

Your original post didnt mention anything about removing tannins or odors, etc... Thus why I mentioned what I did. It sounded as though your trying to save money on doing water changes due to your limited supply. Misunderstanding im sure.

Ive done some self made bucket denitrification filters that have worked great. would love to see what you have and how yours work.

As far as carbon being the actual cause I still think its a theory not 100% proven. There are cases for and against in the issues.

Here is another site with some various info.

But if your concerned, my vote would be to use Purigen.

Whats your flow rate in your reactor? I would have expected it to have changed color in the first week. BUT depending on how much there is to absorb will make a big difference in how fast it changes color.

Hi,

I have a long slim 2L container, packed very tightly with Aquaclay F4-10, driven by an airstone running at 1-2 bubbles a minute!

Hi,

the reactor is in line with an Eheim Classic 2217 so the flow rate will be the output speed of the canister! (I cant estimate as there is a 2.7L pre filter full of mech pro, the classic is full of sponges for purely mechanical filtration, then the reactor!
