Carbon vs No Carbon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I always replace it with the biomax that they sell for the aqua clear filters...its just comes in a little bag and you drop it in:)
you could even go as simple as another sponge.

Thanks guys i thyink im going to give it a shot. Will be at my lfs later this week so maybe ill pick up some additional filter media and try. thanks:thumbsup:

yeah with emporers, i just cut filter floss that fits into the slots. it can be rinsed/reused and much better than paying for the replacement cartridges marineland sells.

on canister filters, i just use more bio in place of carbon.

thanks rallysman...uve been really helpful..next time i change my carbon cartridge on my emperor 400, i will put the biomax from aquaclear instead..sux dat i actually bought a whole bottle of carbon..by the way..how often do u change ur carbon/biomax and filter cartridges? thnx in advanced

the double wheels on your 400 should be plenty of biofiltration. get more mech in the filter and rinse it during weekly water changes. catching and removing as much waste out of the tank as possible will help prevent any strange water smells/tints that can develop quicker in a carbonless tank.

i also found that carbon was more trouble than worth, used it once and wasnt a good experience. i will never use it again

i dont quite understand what u mean by get more mech. and when u say rinse, u mean rinse my biowheels? thnx in advnaced.

mechanical filtration is the blue floss youve got on your emperor cartridges. i just went and bought a roll of filter floss (plain, white) and cut pieces to the size of the grey media cartridges that would have come with your 400. stick these into the slots of your emp and it will work the same minus the carbon. they can be reused for quite a while but should be rinsed/cleaned on at least a weekly basis. rinse them during a water change using the dirty tank water to clean them. i wouldnt rinse my biowheel unless it really started clogging up and again i would only use dirty tank water to clean it.

i only use carbon when i filter out medication. theyre not good to be used regularly or on a long term basis
