I think it is just those who don't do enough water changes and rely on carbon to clean the water and their oscars get HITH and blame it on the carbon when they take it out and do more water changes.

BINGO...

Nothing is better for a tank full of any large cichlids than water changes. Especially Oscars. Those fish are poop machines.

ok here I go.......... Ok the reason why carbon is believe to cause HITH has nothing to do with actual carbon causing it. HITH is still caused by poor water and diet.

What makes carbon bad is it disguises the poor water quality of a poor fish keeper. People use carbon to "remove organic wastes", and to get rid of any smelly water. Well you know what works better then carbon for both of those problems??? WATER CHANGES.....

Water changes will directly remove organic wastes and will reduce smell. Smell is from build up of wastes which means if your tank smells then your lazy *** needs to do a water change.

So the connection between carbon and HITH is because people leave the carbon in and they think there water isn't yellow yet and doesn't smell meaning its not dirty yet. (and yes about 90% of fish keepers don't have test kits and this is there means of knowing when water is dirty) When truly the water is filthy and the fish is suffering and soon gets HITH.

Moral of the story folks is keep your water quality high. How to do that???

1.) Don't overstock your tank. I know if a 55 gallon is big enough for 1 Oscar then why can't a second or third fit???? well because if you test you water you will see how fast the water gets polluted. The lighter your tank is stocked the easier it is to keep clean.

2.) Don't over feed

3.) WATER CHANGES..... it only takes a few minutes folks.

Basicly I have done these very basic things that I learned from every single piece of aquarium literature written since the existence of mankind and those three easy things is all you need to do. No fancy machines are needed or fancy medias etc. Follow those simple three things and I not only promise you I guarantee you will never get HITH or any other poor water issue desease. I have yet to even see the slightest sign of illness in any of my fish since I began. Nothing more then ick from the shipping.

It is a topic that is widely debated, and in fact the topic in it self is banned in many discus forums as it causes "immature fighting" and banter. It is based on circumstantial evidence some believe it some don't. (and this is just me) I ONLY USE IT TO REMOVE MEDS!!! It is not necessary as stated before water changes are king around these parts. I can never do enough of them. It may and it may not we don't know YET, as soon as some scientist fund some college grads for a senior project we might get some "big university" points of view, but for now it is up to us to decide. I choose only to remove meds with it.....

ohhh ya I forgot to mention that is the only real use for carbon. Although I have never needed to use meds before
