Carbon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
have you experienced tannins being leecehd into the water, or are you just using the carbon as a precaution?

i can say that the carbon causes fin erosion or in some cases with SA cichlids HITH disease, (i havnt heard of or seen any scientific proof of this....yet)

change out the carbon or get rid of it completely and take up some chemipure or purigen, since your tank is a 375 gal chemipure of purigen might cost your afew extra bucks,

but again you dont need either, but it does help.

from personal experience i use vitachem to reverse any fin errosion or HITH disease, my severum had both, and now they are gone, but her left perctoral fin never seems to heal, its been split ever since i got her in a LFS about 3 years ago. but other than that she's a beautiful fish.

I use a professional service on tank maintenance and I am pretty sure that carbon has been sitting in those eheims for extended periods of time--much beyond 2-4 weeks. I have had some really bad experience with severums and uarus that have not died but have shown some bad fin erosion.....thought this might be a contributing factor.

Professional service? Ack! Just put your bathing suit on and get in there and clean

If you have a question about this pro service, put a mark (clip a corner, tie a thread on, just something that looks normal (factory) them)on the charcoal bags (?) or be real nosey and watch them carefully, Hey your paying 'em.

Do they have an explaination for your problems (why they can't cure them) ?

I believe that there are actually tannins being released. It's not outlandish in looks but I guess I would consider myself pretty anal on appearance. I haven't marked the eheims to make sure they are constantly touching them. I have heard of one customer that does something to try to catch them if they don't touch the eheims. The latest thing beyond pulling the carbon is "stray voltage"--see post under general aquaria.

The water is really hard here and that was always an excuse on the SA's having burned fins.

Hey I read those pike guys constantly--they really know their s--- on the breed.
