from my experience, no.
Unless you have some problems with your water like tanins or meds. I dont use carbon in any of my filters.
 
the only thing that will help reduce nitrates are plants and water changes.
 
:iagree: with Rallysman...some plants and lots of water changes for nitrates and I only use carbon if I have to remove meds from the water, which isn't often. :)
 
carbon should be changed every month b/c it don't last long and gets gummed up very fast....


I myself don't use carbon
