Cardinals at OC petsmarts Dying right away

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I only bought 8, but within 2 days only 5 are left...Stopped by the store again and noticed a lot of those fish were acting weird, like the 3 that I lost. I didn't buy anymore after that

THis happened to me also. I bought a large number of neon tetra's to be tank mates with my pet Lucifer. Although I lost 75% of these neons? Very strange indeed.

Isn't Lucifer a piranha?
Aren't neons bite-sized?

I've seen Piranhas and neons co-existing in tanks before.

As long the Piranha isn't 'trained' to attack and kill everything they will be fine.

To be fair, most cardinals are wild caught, which contributes to loss in stores and once they arrive home to your own tank.

I'm unsure of where Petsmart's cardinals come from, but I'd bet they are wild caught. My own local store has a lot of trouble keeping those alive, they usually pass the first day after receiving.

I think you are right about a sick strain, OP. I got 15 neon, 10 black noeons, and 13 cardinals during this sale. The are spread over 3 fully cycled and clean quarentines. As of today I have 4 neons, 8 plack neons, and 7 cardinals left. Appears to be NTD and a very virulent strain. I've never know NTD to take out cardinals, but they demonstrate all the classic signs, and it kills them quick. 8 hours like clockwork from first sign to death. Anyone have an suggestions? Am I going to lose 38 tetras on this deal.

high protein/fat diet 3x a day feeding until they're "settled in" I do this at work with our card/neons and usually only lose a small handful per shipment ( approx 1-2 in 50 ). I have had good luck using ON's prime reef flake essentially powdered. they come in in the AM and I feed them as soon as they are settled into the system and schooled ( approx 2-4 hours out of the bag, after drip acclimation). frozen baby brine will likely do the trick as well or similar type foods. the smaller they are the more often i feed.

Thats if your waters good, and everything else is "right".

Couldn't it just be a bio-overload, 45 neons added into one tank overnight has to cause something right?

Sounds right to me..

Remove them from the 3 tanks they are in. And put them in a quarantine tank. NOW! A tupperware bin from Walmart is like $5, no excuse. Separate them from the rest of your stock.
