Hello, i am redoing my 100g freshwater tank and i was wondering if BRACKISH water is required for the fish to live. Also, it will be going in with assorted freshwater community fish.

Yes it requires higher end brackish and eventually thrives in marine. This is the reason I am getting rid of the two I adopted, but I wanted to rescue them from Walmart and give them a good home potential.

i've heard of them living in fresh water but it's not good for them, i had some for a couple of years but ended up selling them as i got sick of mixing the salt water and it can get quite expensive.

Yup, they definitely require high end brackish as they get older... so if your looking for a freshwater fish / puffer, GSP is far from ideal...

Depending on what your looking for and the size of the tank, there are quite a few options available as far as freshwater puffers go...

I just adopted two of them myself. I'm looking forward to the transition towards marine (I had one years ago, but when I moved I could not take him with me) but I still have a few questions myself. Not trying to hijack your thread by any means, but maybe we can both learn a thing or two at the same time!

They start out Fresh, but increasingly Brackish is best as they grow, or so I've read. I didn't have my little guy very long, so I am unsure how quickly they grow.

IIRC, not very fast. Mine are still practically the same size as when I got them, just fatter. Though I plan on rehoming mine before they require salt conversion.
