The endangered fin whale is a rare sight in the waters around Japan, so when a cargo ship docked in Hokkaido with a whale carcass stuck to its bow, the event became national news Hokkaido University researchers who came to examine the whale have found no large wounds on its body, leading them to conclude that the whale was probably already dead when it came into contact with the ship.
