caring for a baby anaconda

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have owned about half a dozen green anacondas over the years, both males and females, and I can tell you from experience they can be a handeful. Their maintenance is not at all like you would expect. You do NOT want huge water containers in the enclosure unless you can provide plenty of air flow. They will get blisters and infections quite easily. I have always maintained mine like a large burm. or retic. with a decent sized water bowl but nothing crazy. I will also warn you about their tempermental tendencies. They will be fine for several minutes while being handled and then in the blink of an eye latch right on to you, and for a large stocky snake they can move fast. But if you stil decide to get one, I highly recommend getting an animal as young as possible, it makes it easier to get them to accept new foods.

I have kept all kinds of snakes including hots (venomous) over the years and if you have not had much experience in keeping bad tempered or large snakes i would suggest to find a different choice. They have a very bad temper and have a high demand of needs. If you can not meet all of the snakes needs and be able to take the needed precautions when dealing with a snake that can kill you, then you should not own one. If you decide to get one still then do your research and i suggest finding someone with a large snake and go get some hands on time and get to know large snakes. Remember it only takes one mistake with animals like this and they could end your life. I had to get rid of my animals like alligators and rattle snakes for the safety of others so take those things into account. Like locks, rules and strong cages in a escape proof room, they are not the kind of animals you give free run of the house. so in closing just do your research before making your decision k and good luck.

is a rat boa more aggresive or about the same as a anaconda?

then i suppose i will try something different. wath about a jungle carpet python?

Jungle carpets are good, won't get to big and usually calm down after some handleing.

Like its already said you shouldnt really keep one due to the massive needs they have, why not try somthing else, Corns or rat snakes are really good first snakes and you wont have to worry about them getting massive or a royal python? If you want somthing thats gonna get a bit bigger why not go for a common boa or a redtail? They are readily available, get to a decent size and have a fairly good temperament.

a head less than one inch? You might want to reconsider even the carpet python then my friend. maybe something like a king snake would be better for you.

if u want big and soppy then id say a boa. but a male...can still reach a good size.
boas r lovely (well all mine r) u still have an impressive beautiful snake, very uncommon they have feeding probs etc. easy to care and maintain for.

im currently considering an anaconda and im still not sure. it is something u have to think long and hard for.
i will admit that i keep my burm in a small enclosure for his size (although im currently about to upgrade him) but hes out every night, he goes swimming in my pool and gets taken to the park as soon as its warm. so he gets plenty of exercise and is extremely slim for a burm even though he gets fed a rabbit every 4 weeks.
he is kept in a double locked viv as i have a daughter that is snack sized, and he only come out when shes in bed.

what i will admit to is before he bit me i would do everything except feeding by myself. since i fed him on my own (the ONE time) and he bit me and tried to pull me in the viv, now thankfully im a big sturdy girl and managed not to lose my balance. my phone was out of reach and luckily hes a gentle feeder and didnt constrict. but ever since EVERYTHING is done when i have people round and i dont think i would have ever gained the respect i have now without this happening.
i ent up in hospital as he had ripped my calf muscle from trying to pull me in.

there was one other instance where we were going next door (my best mates) and he would follow me round.
one day he just seemed to leap over her fence and was halfway in to a bush. all i could get hold of was 2ft of tail....on the other end was a very unhappy burm. we wrestled for 10mins...or so everyone else says, i was pretty sure it was about 3 hours lol
LUCKILY i got hold of him properly and cuddled him and he calmed down. but WOW i never realised the power. i was shaking after from the adrenaline and the next day my whole body ached.
it just makes u realise that YES this animal could so EASILY kill u if it wants.

these r the only 2 probs iv had with him, otherwise hes not far off from a dog.

sorry for the essay lol just want to make u aware that an animal of that size is underestimated greatly due to our ignorance.

thanks
