Saltwater have better color hands down but freshwater is better in my opinion because the fish are

1) Breedable
2) Not so Pricy
3) Better Personality (Maybe besides a puffer, they have awesome personalities)
4) And dont have to worry about improper transport or catching methods

Freshwater all the way... (African Cichlids)

Personalities in fresh and salt are about equal. I've had both very personable oscars and moray eels that would eat out of my hand. With salt, you get awesome colors and awesome predators, but tank maintenance is just too much for a large set up. I'm already anal enough with my fresh setups, let alone when I had salt. I was constantly worrying about tank parameters...

I've done saltwater and I too had a kickin SW pred tank, Miniatus Grouper, Panther, Niger Trigger, Squirrel Fish, Cuban Hog Fish, Harliquen Tusk....awesome tank lemme tell yaz. But the amount of matience I had to put into it and the frustration of watching my fish die for no reason and not being able to fix it drove me crazy. Plus the prices on SINGLE fish was astronomical...crazy beyond belief. Since I've gotten into FW fish...mostly cichlids...i have found more pleasure in the fish that I keep because I am able to actually sit back and ENJOY them. That I think is what makes FW fish the most desireable. Plus the availablilty, lower prices, awesome predatory capabilities...its just a nice combo!! SUPER SIZE ME!!

Odd, when I kept marine tanks I thought that they were much easier to maintain than FW tanks... you don't need to do half of the water changes that you do with a FW tank. Also, I like FW fish A LOT better... to be honest, I find most marine fish pretty boring. I'm not saying that they're boring as a fact, but it's my opinion. :P Also, IMO a nicely planted FW tank looks MUCH better than a reef tank or a tank with live rock. I woudn't say FW is cheaper though, and certainly not when you're buying high end or rare fishes... and I would say that rare FW fish generally cost more than rare marine fish. But, for most fish FW is quite a bit cheaper.

If you like Carnivores fish it is best to keep fresh water.. cos eating life bait will make the water dirty easier. If suddenly you need to change water, I dun think you can change the sea water in time.. Sometime my RTC throw out all the goldfish and so I have to change the water.. For marine I keep yellow Wessel.. got nice 4 teeth.. 2 upper and 2 lower.. throw a goldfish and see how it rip the fish parts by parts..
