Carnivorous Mini-Predator

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
LOL! I'll be figuring out how to change my age on this thing.....

I really like the puffer idea, but I'm not sure which kind yet. What is the smallest tank that a DP could go in? What about 2 DP? 3?

Also, there seems to be many suggestions on the kind of puffer.

So, some things I'm looking for......
Ideally, something that isn't incredibly hard to feed. I can get snails easy, maybe even ghost shrimp every little while, but if it takes frozen foods even better.
Really ideally, it would be nice to unload the occasional guppy fry on it, if possible. I would never feed store bought feeders but at least my own feeders aren't loaded with disease.
Also, I'd like something that moves a bit, and doesn't hide in one spot.

Thanks for all the help so far!
Oh, and just wanted to say.... This is a really nice forum you got here .I asked this same question a week ago on another forum and all I got was get a bigger tank.

People reccomend 3 gallons per carinotetraodon but it vary from species to species, stock to that limit but prepare for a few loses, Assuming you only have larger fish in your 38 you could try a senegal bichir not particularly aggresive but when i got mine at 10" it had cleaned out every fish in my tank under 5" in a week.

Butis butis. One of the most predatory fish around and won't grow bigger then 15cm.

I would go with a puffer to love them personally i would get an Monotrete Cochinchinensis AKA fangs puffer awesome little guys wish i could find one thats not in Brackish water i've found there hard to acclimate back to freshwater :(

Random, semi on topic question: Are Black Ghost Knives really that preditory? I have yet to see one over 5", what is the key to keeping them alive? But I would go with the spotted leaf fish, they are fairly cool. or maybe a Needlefish. (PS- I understand your pain, my parents made me reduce my aquariums- down to 4 now in my room: 120g, 60g, 12g and 3g- It makes me sad)

I don't think BGK are that preditory i've seen many kept with tetras with out a problem

Also i wouldn't get a centopoma AKA spotted leaf fish they will max out at around 7''-8'' so they will out grow a 20 gallon
