I'm trying to gather as much personal experience on carpet pythons as possible. I'm looking for information regarding the ease of handling, feeding and general behavior (activty level, aggression, tankmates possible?, etc).

Thanks.

Im not an expert about carpets, but I'll tell ya what I do know. When they're small they are very nippy, they bite a lot, so it takes some patience. As they grow older they calm down a bit. I'm pretty sure tankmakes are out of the question. A lot of people still probably do it, but from what I know its not a good idea.

I'm gonna send you some help.

What type of carpet are you looking into?
Most of the species are pretty similer, except for availibility, color, and size differences. As said above babies are usually nippy, but with gentle handling and as they grow they will soon realize that your not going to eat them. Carpets are semi-aboreal, especially younger ones, so having branches in with them would be a great benifit to them. As long as you get them healthy, theyre pretty easy to care for. Younger snakes often do better in smaller cages, and most adults will do fine in 36"x18"x24" sized enclosures. The temps on the cool side of the cage shouldnt get lower then 75 degrees F, the warm side should be in the upper 80's, and humidity should be 40%-60%, with it being higher when the snake goes into shed. Its never a good idea to keep more then one reptile in an enclosure unless for breeding. Some people do it with seemingly no problems, but there are big health risks, stress risks, and feeding risks, along with others. Personally I feel that its not worth the risks. After their nippy stage, most carpets are pretty docile and curious, being easy to handle. I have not kept ant carpets yet, but if you still have any more question I can do my best to ask, or you can go to Python Palaca and post in the forums, a few of the members there have worked with and bred many of the different species of carpets and would be glad to help.

I dont know if it helps much in your desision, but the most common one youll see will probably be jungle carpets, and also the lest expesnive

some ppl were asking about carpets so i thought id bump this out of the lost ark.

Damn this is an old thread. Did you ever get one Ming?

I duno, there are differences between most the aussie pythons. Diamonds have to be kept cooler and not fed much. Care then becomes similar for the rest of them, lots of hybrids out their of course between them all. They all grow to different sizes, and have different associated temprements.
If you include them Bredli are generally a bit heavier bodied, but are probably the most placid of the lot. Inland carpets can be pretty placid too, and some have a nice blue tint to them. Think a lot of aussies regard it as a good starter.
To be honest, don't have a bad thing to say about any of them.

I don't know a whole lot about snakes. My husband (lovespunaround) would be the one to talk to. But I will say that our oldest carpet python is definitely my favorite snake. She's very friendly and outgoing, our younger one on the hand is still in her moody phase.

http://moreliapythons.com should solve all your questions and more. It has links to various breeders who are members, and classifieds too.
